So much for Hawaiian shirts, leis and pipeline.
AWWWWWWWWW - Where are the waves mate???
If you're on a life raft... forget water, just give
me my six string....wwwaaaaaaaa!!!!
Little surfer drummer boy....tap, tap, tap...
There he is! Kill the sponger mate! Aww yeaaaaa!!Australian hardcore band Parkway Drive recently released a new video for their song KARMA.
I won't use this blog as a means to trash talk the genre because the musician-ship is admirable and I have friends who actually love screaming, double bass and guttural expressions of angst and aggression generally associated with this category of music.
That said, Parkway Drive's latest video is a bit of an enigma to me.
Hardcore music is by nature dark, gritty, angry and raw. These emotions seem to be polar opposite to the setting Parkway chose for their video production.
Idyllic blue waters, perfect sand, sun and a decent swell in the background...what's there to be upset about?!?!
The tune starts out with the group on the beach. The lead singer staring down the camera and belching indiscernible lyrics as if he were calling the Bra Boyz to arms.
Then about a 1/3 of the way through, the boys drop their instruments and head towards an inflatable raft in wetsuits as if they're going on some SEAL team mission.
In reality this is just a segway to the angriest surf session of all time.
Frothy tow-at barrels, huge hacks and some strapped in flips montage their way across the screen in between underwater drumming, homo erotic guitar playing and a seemingly pissed off lead singer bitching about no waves. Then our eyes are diverted to what obviously is the source of this band of hardcore surfers' frustration.
A lone sponger, with his kooky swim fins and flaming aerials appears, taking no heed to surf etiquette and simply causing all the blokes to go ballistic back on the beach.
The takeaway from this viewing experience is not only the realization that the ongoing feud between surfers and spongers is tired, outdated and ridiculous, but so is the entire premise of this video and this band.
Sorry Parkway Drive ... bettah you go home...
