Stowe's GondolaLast week I came into Vermont for the debut of the Craig Kelly Proto Facility at Burton, which was a worthwhile event. That trip was originally supposed to include a ride day with Jake Burton at Stowe, but my flight got delayed and so did my ride day.
However I couldn't leave VT without taking laps at the Green Mountain state's oldest and most renowned resort.
Home to Burton employees, UVM shredders and high-end tourists from east coast cities and around the world, Stowe has changed over the years. Originally a place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of southern resorts like Killington or Mt Snow, Stowe has become a world class destination unto itself.
In the last five years the resort has spent over $400 million in upgrades and expansion most notably via the Lodge at Spruce Peak. Yet despite such an ambitious build-up, Stowe hasn't really lost any of its classic New England charm.
This also could be my impression of the place on a cloudy, cool Wednesday. Though judging by the amount of cars in the parking lot you wouldn't think the resort was empty, particularly having just received six inches of fresh.
Stowe is a great mountain ...except for the fact it's totally overpriced and they think they're the Aspen of the east coast.
