Kiteboarder Stephen Schaffer was killed by sharks in
Florida this week.On
Wednesday, February 3rd a 38-year-old kite boarder, Stephen Schaffer, was doing his thing off the beach in Stuart, Florida. Soon a lifeguard noticed he was off his board and struggling and yelling about.
After paddling out on a rescue board, the lifeguard noticed the man was slumped over his kite and surrounded by a pool of blood. Schaffer told the lifeguard he'd been bitten by sharks.
After noticing multiple shadows circling beneath, the lifeguard brought him to shore where paramedics performed CPR. Schaffer had suffered a 10 inch gash in right thigh, had numerous teeth marks on buttocks and had his right hand was mauled in apparent attempt to fight off up to three sharks.
He later died at a nearby hospital. It was the first fatal shark attack in Florida in five years and perhaps the first ever recorded on a kite boarder.
Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
