As the summer rolls along, you’d normally expect the few ski areas open to be winding down. Not the case at High Cascade Snowboard Camp on Mt. Hood, as they just unveiled a new 22ft half pipe. This makes HCSC the only place on the planet that you can ride an “Olympic†size pipe. Needless to say, many of the Olympic hopefuls have descended on Mt. Hood to practice including the US and Australian snowboard teams.
So far, the weather has not been cooperating 100% and there has been some wind and rain putting a damper on things. Judging by the pipe sessions that have taken place during the few windows of sun, it seems that double corks are going to be the new standard. There are rumors of some of the riders having practiced on half pipes with foam pits this spring and it appears that they have brought their new tricks here to test them out.
Due to the number of riders that have come out to train, HCSC has committed to keeping the 22ft pipe and grooming it every night for their 3rd and 4th sessions. This pipe will be going off for the next couple of weeks and giving us a sneak peak into the 09/10 competition season.
