Danny Davis - Olympic dreams on hold?
And the hits just keep on coming.... Found out late last night that Danny Davis, who just won the Dew Tour superpipe finals in Snowbasin, Utah, was injured in a "non-snowboarding related" accident. We can only speculate on how it happened but according to an unsubstantiated comment posted on Boardistan Davis "was partying and riding around on four wheelers at the [DC] Mountain Lab when he was injured."
In an official statement from his board sponsor Burton, "Olympic hopeful Danny Davis, has been admitted to a Utah hospital to treat a back injury sustained in a non-snowboarding accident on Sunday. Davis won Saturday's Winter Dew Tour halfpipe event at Snowbasin. No other medical details are available at this time."
Obviously this is a huge blow to the snowboarding community who are still reeling from the tragic head injury fellow Frend Kevin Pearce sustained less than three weeks ago. While Kevin is slowly recovering (send well wishes here), the injury to Davis just prior to the final US Snowboarding Grand Prix events add a new and unfortunate layer of drama to the race to finalize the men's Olympic halfpipe team.
2006 Torino Gold Medalist, Shaun White, already secured his Olympic berth after winning both the Copper Grand Prix and the Mammoth Grand Prix. Davis has been coming on strong all season with two Dew Tour wins (Breck & Snowbasin), and a win in Mammoth Stop #1.
With the extent of his injury unknown at the moment, time will tell how this will all shake out. Updates on Davis's condition are being posted to his Facebook page: Danny Davis Pro Snowboarder.
Stay tuned....
UPDATE: January 18th - 5:30 PM PST...
In an official release by Mosaic Mangement as posted on Danny's Facebook page (Danny Davis Pro Snowboarder):
"OFFICIAL UPDATE JAN 18 Danny Davis will undergo surgery today in Utah to repair a L3 spine fracture. Doctors remain positive Danny will make a full recovery. His injury is the result of an ATV accident which took place Sunday morning in Utah. Due to the injuries sustained Danny will not be competing in the remaining snowboard events throughout 2010."
