Chris BertishYesterday at Mavericks, South African Chris Bertish took first place and $50,000 for the best performance at the Mavericks Invitiational. Huge sets in the 22 foot range pounded the coast all day under sunny skies. While the competition was the focus, a bizzare news bit occurred when a unexpected surge pushed over through the lagoon and swamped the spectator area, causing some panic and more than a few injuries.
