ASA High School Tour Scedule
by: Jimbo

Rio Rancho HS: Anthony Furlong Method Grab

ASA Entertainment (ASA) has selected 100 schools as this year s recipients of the ASA High School Tour (Tour). The Tour travels the country each year with top ranked skateboarding, BMX and inline skating pros performing daring stunts on a mobile 13 half-pipe in support of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. During on-campus assemblies at these 100 schools, the Tour delivers an important anti-tobacco message through attention-grabbing half-pipe performances, entertaining commentary, real-life testimony, trivia questions, brochures, announcements and autograph sessions. It also educates the students about the dangers of tobacco use, the risks from second-hand smoke and ways to combat the pressure to start smoking.

The 2010 Spring Tour will be on the road from February 22 through May 21, traveling to nine key markets across the country while encouraging students to live tobacco-free lives. The 2010 Spring Tour visits one new school each day, five days per week, in each of the following locations:

2010 ASA High School Tour Spring Schedule:

Feb. 22 26 Ontario, California
March 1 5 Sacramento, California
March 8 12 San Jose, California
March 15 19 Los Angeles, California
March 22 26 Phoenix, Arizona
April 20 23 Lexington, Kentucky
April 26 30 Buffalo, New York
May 10 14 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
May 17 21 Boston, Massachusetts

An additional 55 schools will receive action sports events in the fall when the Tour travels to Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and Houston - from September 7 through November 19.

The ASA High School Tour, which is in its eleventh year, is offered free of charge to the schools, largely as a result of its various backers, which include producer, ASA Entertainment, and the U.S. Marine Corps. ASA has produced the Tour since its inception in 2000, while the Marine Corps will be enjoying their fourth tour.

When we started this program 11 years ago, we hoped it would have the positive impact on students that we ve been fortunate enough to affect, said ASA Entertainment CEO Rick Bratman. If we can encourage even one student to stop smoking or have second thoughts about tobacco use, it s worth our effort. We re very thankful to the schools, the action sports pros and our sponsors for the opportunity to bring our tobacco-prevention program to the kids and to reach them with activities that they listen to and respect.

Top pros from the X Games and ASA Action Sports World Tour will perform at each stop, presenting a rare opportunity for students to interact with their heroes in a one-on-one setting. Currently scheduled to appear this year are pros John Parker (State College, PA) Koji Kraft (Addison, Illinois), Anthony Furlong (Tampa, Florida), Marc Englehart (Lansdale, Pennsylvania), Jay Eggleston (Denver, Colorado), Austin Coleman (Los Angeles, California), Gabe Weed (Walnut Creek, California), Phil Hajal (Gainesville, Florida), Rob Nolli (Orlando, Florida), Elliot Sloan (New York, New York) and Trevor Meyer (Little Rock, Arkansas). After each show, students can obtain pictures and autographs and talk to the athletes about staying tobacco-free.

Canadian Open Results
by: Jimbo

The second annual Burton Canadian Open (CANO) has come to a close and Brett Esser (USA) and Enni Rukaj rvi (FIN) have come out on top, winning the men s and women s slopestyle competition today at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. After seeing optimal conditions during the week with bluebird skies, the weather took a turn for the worse with low visibility and frigid temps making for challenging riding during finals.

After finishing first in Friday s slopestyle semis, Jordie Karlinski wasn t able to pull out a winning run in finals, allowing European Open slopestyle champion, Enni Rukaj rvi to ride away with first. Rukaj rvi blew away the competition, scoring a whopping 96.17, nearly 20 points ahead second place finisher, Lisa Wiik (NOR) and third place Sina Candrian (SUI). Rukaj rvi s winning run featured a Cab-on to boardslide, followed by a gap to 50/50, into a frontside 360, a 50/50 on the downrail, followed by a 50/50 to indy along the wallride, nailing a smooth frontside 360 tailgrab, into a backside 540 indy, finishing with a big Cab 720 mute.

This is my first time in Canada and it was cool to win here right after the BEO win, said Enni. The course took a little time to get used to as I am not as strong on the rails but I am very happy about this win and will be back next year.

Canadians Jon Versteeg and Robby Balharry took home second and third respectively but it was
Brett Esser, the second place finisher from semis, who stepped up his game to take home the win. Esser put down a run that started off with a Cab-on to back 180 off, followed by a switch 50/50, into a frontside boardslide through the kink, followed by a backflip, to a 180-on to switch backside 180 out, followed by a boardslide to fakie along the wallride. Esser then dropped into the jump line pulling a switch backside 900 mute, followed by a backside 720 tailgrab over the channel, finishing with a massive frontside 1080 tailgrab.

I m feeling good, this is my first Open win since the US Open junior jam when I was 13, I will for sure be coming back to the Canadian Open, said Esser of his win. It was a super good course, the weather didn't help but the course held up great.

Winter Dew Tour - Kaitlyn Farrington Wins Womens SNB Pipe
by: Jimbo

Photo: AlliKaitlyn FarringtonSun Valley, Idaho-native Kaitlyn Farrington claimed the first Winter Dew Tour victory of her career at the women s snowboard superpipe final at the Toyota Championship, while 28-year-old JJ Thomas pulled down the top score in the men s competition at Mount Snow Resort to claim his first win on the three-stop circuit as well. In a night of firsts for both Farrington and Thomas, the wins for each landed them atop the year-long standings, giving them the Dew Cups in their respective disciplines.

After a strong run that included a backside 540, and inverted 720 with a grab, a stalefish as well as a backside 720, Farrington was awarded a 90.75 to win the women s snowboard superpipe final. The win, coupled with a second-place finish last month at the second stop of the Winter Dew Tour, gave the 20 year old the boost she needed to claim the Dew Cup.

I m so stoked to win the Dew Cup, said Farrington. It s just icing on the cake in what s been a pretty awesome season.

In the first final of her tenure on the circuit, 15-year-old Maddy Schaffrick from Steamboat Springs, Colo. made it onto the podium, taking second with an 85.00, while Norwegian Olympian Kjersti stgaard Buaas, 27, rounded out the top three with a 72.50.

Thomas winning run included a McTwist, a flawless 1080 and a frontside 900, giving him a final score of 96.75. The number-two spot on the podium went to 19-year-old Brennen Swanson of Stillwater, Minn., whose huge double cork to end his run aided in his score of 91.00. Swanson s run put Steve Fisher, 27, in third with a score of 85.00. Heading into the final, Fisher was the top contender for the Dew Cup and needed a first- or second-place finish to secure it.

Consistency was the name of the game for Breckenridge, Colo. s Thomas, who made all three finals this season, never finishing worse than sixth at any competition. His win tonight allowed him to jump to the top of the points standings, edging fellow Breckenridge-local Fisher by a margin of five points. Thomas 245 points over the course of the season gave him his first Dew Cup.

I couldn t be more excited, and I never imagined winning an entire Tour, said Thomas. Brennen had a pretty amazing run tonight too, and I guess he helped me win the Cup by coming in second place.

Sunday s events for the Toyota Championship include the finals for the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, the official amateur series of the Winter Dew Tour, along with the Toyota Tricktopsy Big Air featuring top freeskiers like Simon Dumont, Bobby Brown and 2009-10 Dew Cup winner in freeski superpipe, Jossi Wells.
